Katherine and a good friend, Machteld, obtained their diving certificate in Egypt. A year later, in December 2001, they dived in the Red Sea again.This dive, at the Elphinstone Reef, ended in disaster.

The friends booked a holiday to Egypt and had chosen a tent camp in traditional Bedouin style, deep in the then still untouched south of Egypt. It seemed like paradise on earth. On the last day of their holiday, a trip was planned to a special diving location: the Elphinstone Reef, a popular but difficult diving location known for its strong currents.
