synopsis
Joan Sträter provides psychotherapy to derailed, mostly immigrant youths. Often boys. The adolescents have usually come into contact with the police, for reasons ranging from violent robberies and assaults to truancy and shoplifting. In the documentary we see Joan at work with Alaa and Adil, fourteen-year-old Moroccan twins. Joan's Boys is about the contact between Joan and 'her boys'; about how their often completely different worlds can still touch each other. The film is not only a double portrait of both the care provider and the 'client', but is also about 'looking' and 'being looked at', and how easily we condemn worlds that are foreign to us.
